Just finished The Shepherd King series and I honestly don’t have any negatives to say about this. It was so beautifully written. @rmgillig did such a wonderful job world building and making a captivating magic system in this series, as well as giving us lovable (and hateable) and relatable characters.

Not me picking up three different reads as I wait for my copy of Heat of the Everflame to arrive.

I gotta admit, Powerless is WAY overhyped. The voice and POV, for me, is SO distracting. MMC is so arrogant, though he’s gotten better as the story’s gone on. The way the story is told is making it so hard for me to want to get to the end.

I seriously can’t say enough good things about this series. I am so in love with each and every character and the connections Penn Cole forms between all of them. I particularly love how Cole describes the world and the things FMC feels and how she justifies it all. It’s REAL and emotional and I will live in this series for some time to come.

I recently watched a video, and I couldn't tell you where or who it was, where the people were talking about how, in this book, you either are a Nesta, or you know a Nesta, and depending on which you are, that's how much you'll like the book and I totally agree with that. I think it would be really hard for someone who hasn't been in the very deepest, darkest spaces of their mind to truly understand how much Nesta hates herself, or how hard it is to pull yourself out of such a dark space in your mind. I think SJM did a beautiful job of walking the reader through the process of coming back to yourself, and trusting the people around you to help you back up.
And although the spice in this one felt a little over the top to me, I can absolutly see how it was necessary for Nesta's story and how it built her relationship with Cassian. The crazy detailed spice knocked a star off this review for me, but overal I loved this book.

I am loving the perspective change in this book - from Feyra’s viewpoint to more of a third person perspective, explaining Nesta and Cassians story. I think, if people aren’t huge fans of Nesta’s story, it may be because they haven’t been in a deep traumatic darkness like she was in. A physical and mental transformation like that changes absolutely everything and can make a person incredibly dark centered, internal, and separate.

It underscores the importance of the lessons we learn in the mistakes we make, and the growth we can help others achieve along the way.

I truly enjoyed the character development, and the Dreaded End did feel very much like a distant father figure that truly wants the best for his child but doesn’t always know how to do it. A very creative story that has elements of sacrifice, trial, longing, justice, and redemption, and one I will hold dear for quite a while.
